When I think back to my early days as a manager, an image comes to mind: I was figuratively standing with my feet in two different buckets—one ‘Leadership’ and the other ‘Friend.’
I felt insecure about in my new role and was a people pleaser. I tried to solve everyone’s problems, believing that being liked would make me a better leader. I quickly learned that that my team already had many friends—I was their only supervisor. They needed someone who set clear expectations and enforced them consistently.
As an Executive Coach, I see many clients struggle with this same dilemma. They strive to lead effectively while also yearning to be friends with their team, but these dual roles can easily pull them in opposite directions.
A truly effective leader cares about people both personally and professionally. Yet there’s a fine line between being friendly and being a friend.
If you or your leaders are straddling both buckets, consider these strategies to regain balance:
- If you socialize, include everyone.
- Hold your team consistently to expectations.
- Never talk poorly about one team member to another.
- Hold your middle managers accountable.
- Don’t tolerate middle managers venting down about the leadership team.
I found that investing in my people brought me greater joy. Following the above steps boosted morale and productivity for everyone.
